A Case of Meconium Ileus

Abstract
One case of the Meconium ileus was treated surgically at the General Surgery Department, Carswell U.S.A.F. Hospital when I was stationed there.
This case was admitted to the Pediatic ward at first and transfered to Surgical ward in order to get surgical correction for intestinal obstruction after the diagnosis had been made.
Exploratory laparotomy showed moderate distention of the small bowel. The size of large bowel was fairly normal. The distal portion of the ileum was completely obstructed and had the appearance of a long tortuous sausage containing deoughy material which could be indented from the outside.
A longitudinal incision was made in the ileum approximately 20 cm from the ileocecal valve and the thick, sticky, inspissated meconium was removed.
The incision in the ileus was closed transversely in two layers using 4-0 chromic catgut on the inner layer and inverting sero-muscular of 4-0 silk.
Following the closure, a very adequate lumen was obtained with free flow of liquid fecal material passed the area of closure into the large bowel.
A review of literature was also made on the subject.
